(Buddy, you got me)

— X Blocks。

X Blocks

"a good wood toy will speak for itself"

(Lucent Cubes)

(Transparent Windows)

(X Blocks)

Fairytale Windows

同樣適合光桌的Luminous Blocks(2.5×2.5×5cm )長方體透光積木

而 Sparkling Stones —

BAUSPIEL, Germany

Warm, solid, wonderful to the touch—that's the first thing you feel
when a BAUSPIEL block settles into your palm.

The wood BAUSPIEL uses feels quite unlike other wooden blocks.
Its particular weight in the hand, its scent of wood,
come back to you again and again as you play.
Because they're solid, they stack easily; their centre of gravity is steady,
and every block you add carries that… settled, reassuring sense of ground.

1 / 14

Sometimes, after a satisfying build, you don't want to take it apart and put it away at all—
you leave it standing, and feel your handiwork a little longer ✨
Which is how the odd accidental knock has happened 🙈—
you brace yourself for the great "crash!" of blocks hitting the floor
(bracing to scream),
only to find that, apart from the one sent flying,
all the rest are still standing exactly where they were (…phew).

2 / 14

From that day on,
whenever I take out BAUSPIEL and start to stack,
there's a grounded kind of safety in my heart 😌 (buddy, you got me).

3 / 14

Build them by a window with natural light spilling in,
and you can watch the work slowly change across the whole day—
as light, shadow and colour shift with the sun's changing angle,
it feels like watching a living work of art 🖼️

4 / 14

BAUSPIEL's light-catching blocks come in a few shapes,
and my own favourite is their cross-shaped frame—the X Blocks.
X Blocks open a completely different line of thinking to stacking:
not only upward, but slotting in, crossing over,
showing a structural creativity unlike ordinary blocks. (And so steady!)
Anyone who hasn't tried BAUSPIEL will, that first time,
feel something quite different from a usual set of blocks 🙂

5 / 14

【 The BAUSPIEL story 】
BAUSPIEL's founders didn't set out with the brand from the start—
they'd been making toys since 1983/84,
but only formally founded BAUSPIEL in 2013.
For nearly thirty years,
the founder and his wife quietly supplied German kindergartens, with almost no marketing at all.
Their belief:
"A good wood toy will speak for itself."

6 / 14

Their workshop sits in Martini-Park, Augsburg—
a site that's part of a climate-protection project, with hydropower, rooftop solar, EV charging: a green campus.
Their own fleet runs on e-bikes and biogas vehicles.
Some of their pieces (the felt accessories) use New Zealand wool,
handmade under fair-trade principles by family workshops in Nepal.

7 / 14

BAUSPIEL isn't only a toymaker,
but a practitioner of social conscience, of care for the environment and for human rights.
In the intention behind the design, and the deeply eco-minded making,
every toy they craft carries their sincere care for children and for the earth 🙂

8 / 14

【 Play with light and colour 】
BAUSPIEL's blocks fall mainly into a light-catching series, built around colour and optics,
and a structural series, built around form.
In our lounge, for instance:
🌈 Lucent Cubes
🌈 Transparent Windows
belong to the light-catching series—vivid, colour-saturated translucent blocks in acrylic.
🪵 X Blocks
are the cross-shaped structural piece—the core skeleton of the BAUSPIEL range.
All of these are here for you to play with 😊

9 / 14

Beyond these, the translucent series also holds
Fairytale Windows—wooden frames set with clear faceted "gems" for a double-sided glow, pairing with castle blocks—
and Luminous Blocks—twice the size of Lucent Cubes, also lovely on a light table (2.5×2.5×5 cm rectangular translucent blocks).
And Sparkling Stones—loose glittering gems to pair with any blocks—
are the one Vira secretly wants and still hasn't got 🙈 (they really do look so beautiful~)

10 / 14

【 BAUSPIEL & children's learning 】
BAUSPIEL's design brings scientific principle, quite naturally,
into the open-ended play best suited to a child's development.
Hold a translucent block up to look through, and the world takes on the block's colour (subtractive colour)—
and a child begins to meet the idea of a "filter."
They start to grasp that the world we see, passed through a different filter, becomes a different perception—
that we can change how we see things through a filter (make it look different).
Some thoughtful children catch on fast, and wonder whether everything we're used to seeing
has some "layer" over it too, and isn't quite as we assume 😉.
In play, you can guide a child to overlap the blocks and watch the colours shift where they meet—
letting them feel the delight of colour theory for themselves.
With older children you can bring in a little optics:
speak, vividly, of what daylight is made of, of how a rainbow forms,
and then of that sun that greets them each morning—
how its bright light-waves cross the vast universe to reach their lovely eyes,
letting them see all this beauty.
If there's a light table at home, every subtle difference in each block's colour and clarity
is magnified by the light, and a child can explore refraction and shimmer in play, and meet what a "projection" is.
Through it all, knowledge that looks hard and dull on paper
becomes something they connect to easily—living, interesting, everyday sense 😉.

11 / 14

BAUSPIEL's design finds fitting points of connection with Reggio Emilia, Waldorf, Montessori and STEM alike.
Those who love loose-parts play can mix BAUSPIEL blocks with all sorts of materials to build something wholly their own.
Every round of play is sure to bring an entirely different discovery, and growth 🌲.

12 / 14

I've said so much 😳…
Part of why I love the BAUSPIEL translucent blocks so
is the block's essence—spatial structure, geometry, the hand-eye work of building—
and part is the beauty and delight of light and colour shifting, endlessly, through play.
And yet—
that warm, plain touch, that natural, warm grain,
is really the thing that draws me back to play, again and again 💛😌

Next time you visit, keep a little time for yourself, too,
and feel, properly, the solid, warm grain of a BAUSPIEL block 🌿~
